Driving on the left

Driving on Rarotonga is on the left handside of the road as in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.  Road rules here are similar to that of both Australia and New Zealand.

Driving will be very different to what you are used to at home. 

There is only one road that encircles the islands coast and in some parts there is also a second road (inland road) that also encirlces the island. Because of the rugged mountainous interior there is no road that crosses the island.

Keep an eye out for, Coconuts and tree branches these can damage you and your vehicle if you park under them. Rarotonga has very little footpaths so take care when passing cyclists, people walking and of course our animals.

Main Rd, Avarua (One Way Street)

Breathalyser testing was introduced in 2008, if caught with excess breath alcohol an individual could face imprisonment.  Radar guns are also in use on Rarotonga which can result in instant fines being issued for exceeding the speed limit.  The speed limits are 50 km/ph for most of the island and 30 km/ph in Avarua.

Remember that you are on holiday, relax and take it easy, there is no reason to speed or drive aggressively over here, furthermore don't drink and drive!

To drive in the Cook Islands you must hold a valid local drivers licence with a class for the vehicle you will drive.  On Rarotonga this is taken care of by the Police Department in downtown Avarua.

Foreign and International driving licences are not accepted as valid licences to drive in the islands.
It will need to be converted to a local licence.  The conversion is straight forward by completing the application form, showing your current licence, having your photo taken and you have a Cook Islands driver licence. The licence is valid until your next birthday and makes a great souvenir to take home.

Remember during peak holidaying months waiting times can be long to get your licence, but the earlier you are at the police station the sooner you can see the island.

Don't forget a small fee of $20 is payable before you are issued your licence.

Temporary licences are available at all Polynesian Rental Cars offices to allow you to drive to the Police station to obtain the photo licence.  A small fee applies.  One issue per person.
